In the Uttar Pradesh election of 2022, the BJP won 255 seats while the Samajwadi Party won 111. Hence, the BJP won a majority and has retained power in the state. In the 2017 election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its allies had won 312 of the state’s 403 Assembly constituencies. BJP’s victory in 2022 was historic as it was the first time in 37 years (after 1985) that a party had returned to power in the state. While CM Yogi Adityanath became the first ever CM of UP to be serving 2 consecutive terms. BJP’s vote share in this election also increased to 45% which is highest since 1957 in the state. Although as the election became bipolar BJP’s seats reduced even after getting historic vote share.

It is being argued by some political analysts that Akhilesh Yadav wants to remain in the UP assembly, to control his MLAs and not to make way for his uncle Shivpal Yadav who has also won from Jaswantnagar constituency. In 2017 Shivpal Yadav had formed his own party after his differences with Akhilesh Yadav. In 2022 Both parties contested the election in an alliance.
