Colombo, Apr 6: Sri Lanka President Gotabaya Rajapaksa issued a notification on Apr 5, revoking the national emergency that was declared just a day prior to Gotabaya's announcement. The revocation comes in line with the ongoing protests that the Sri Lankan govt prioritizes over the severe economic crisis.

The State of emergency was revoked during midnight, on Apr 5. Earlier, on Apr 4, again around midnight, PM Mahinda Rajapaksa had announced an emergency to ensure 'public security and maintenance of public order.' Sri Lanka is facing shortage of food and fuel as well. Foreign exchange crisis has added to the issue. The Sri Lankan economy has witnessed a free fall ever since the outbreak of the pandemic. On Apr 3, the island nation lost its Cabinet to an en masse resignation from their positions leading to a political abandonment of the crisis.

Meanwhile, the opposition has rejected President Gotabaya's invitation to form a 'unity government' and urged for his resignation instead. On Apr 4, the Sri Lankan President had invited all the all political parties represented in the parliament to come together to accept ministerial portfolios in order to find solutions to this national crisis, which the opposition had clearly rejected.
