Mahua Moitra jumps in 'Kaali' controversy; calls the goddess 'meat eating and alcohol accepting'

Kolkata, Jul 5: The Trinamool Congress MP from West Bengal's Krishnanagar, Mahua Moitra made a statement on Tuesday (Jul 5), supporting the Canada-based filmmaker Leena Manimekali. The filmmaker is presently facing severe outage on social media, after a poster for her new film 'Kaali' depicted the goddess smoking.

The poster of Leena Manimekali's movie 'Kaali', that has spurred outrage on social media, not only shows the goddess smoking but Kali is also seen holding a rainbow flag, something globally recognized as symbol of the LGBTQ community. The Hindustan Times quotes Mahua Moitra speaking in support of Mahua Moitra at an event saying, "You have the freedom to imagine your goddess." She further added, "To me, Kaali is a meat-eating, alcohol-accepting goddess...There are some places where whiskey is offered to gods and in some other places it would be blasphemy."
 
 
 
 
 
Earlier, about the objectionable film poster of 'Kaali' which evidently intends to hurt Hindu sentiments, the Indian High Commission in Canada had urged Canadian authorities to withdraw the screening of the film.
 
 
Regarding the outrage that the filmmaker faced on social media, Leena Manimekali defended her stand through a tweet saying, "I have nothing to lose. Till the time I live, I wish to live with a voice that speaks what I believe without fear. If the price for that is my life, it can be given."
