Tarn Taran, Jan 29: In a shocking development, Khalistanis attacked the president of the Gurdwara management committee, Col Harsimran Singh (retd) after he removed Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale’s portrait from Gurdwara Janam Asthan Baba Deep Singh at village Pahuwind in district Tarn Taran of Punjab. The incident occurred on the birth anniversary of Sikh warrior Baba Deep Singh.

A video of the incident went viral on internet. In the video, one can see Col Harsimran Singh (retd), who is president of the gurdwara management committee, was seen asking a group of Khalistanis to remove a portrait of Bhindranwale from Gurdwara premises. When they refused, Col Singh (retd) removed the portrait himself. He was heard saying, “It will not be allowed to put up this poster here”.

After the video of the incident went viral, leaders of Sikh organisations led by Shiromani Akali Dal Amritsar’s Harpal Singh Bler, rushed to the gurdwara. “We demanded registration of a first information report (FIR) against the president for allegedly hurting Sikh sentiments,” he said.

In response to the escalating tension, the police escorted Col Harsimran Singh from the scene. During this intervention, the group of Khalistanis armed with sticks and swords damaged his vehicle, but the police successfully moved him to a secure location.

Col Harsimran Singh (retd.) justified the incident, stating objections to displaying Bhindranwale's portrait near the area designated for devotees' shoes and unauthorized tent setup by Sikh volunteers without the gurdwara management's permission.

Deputy Superintendent of Police, Preet Inder Singh, stated, "When the police were securing the president, some individuals attacked the vehicle, resulting in injuries on both sides, including an inspector-rank official. Talks are ongoing between the parties to settle the dispute."

Notably, the gurdwara operates independently and is not under the control of the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC). The incident has sparked concerns within the Sikh community, and efforts are underway to de-escalate the situation through dialogue.

Col Harsimran Singh (retd) served in the Indian Army for 31 years. He authored a book on Sikh warrior Baba Deep Singh titled “Deep Singh Shaheed – The Man in the Legend”, published in 2022. Col Singh (retd) retired from the Army in 2011.
