Abuja, October 13: Boko Haram terrorists have been creating constant chaos in some African countries including Nigeria. Hence taking a strict action against them has convicted and sentenced 45 Boko Haram members to between 3 and 31 years in jail. In the first phase of the mass trial, 468 suspects out of 575 have been discharged. “The court ordered that the 468 discharged persons should undergo deradicalization and rehabilitation programmes before they are handed over to their respective state governments,” Lai Mohammed, the information minister of the country said in a statement.

UN and other international communities criticized these closed-door trials for two reasons. One is for holding up too many cases at the same time and secondly, the conduct of the proceedings may deny the defendants the right to a fair trial and an effective defense.

Though despite various criticisms, the trial has been upheld by many people a justice for the victims of Boko Haram terrorists. Islamist insurgency has left at least 20,000 people dead and driven 2 million from their homes in northeastern Nigeria.
