Ban of firearms will narrow the chances of the Mass shooting: PM Turnbull

Sydney, October 6: In the last three Months amnesty ended today, around 51,000 illegal firearms which are one-fifth of all illegal guns in the country has been surrendered said the Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull.

 

Speaking to the local media in Sydney, Turnbull said that the tough gun ownership laws in Australia ban the semi-automatic rifles and guns will narrow the chances of the Mass shooting which happened in Las Vegas.

 

The weapons which were collected will be destroyed. It is the first three months amnesty in 20 years in Australia. According to a government statement, among them were 19th-century guns, a homemade machine gun, a rocket launcher and a pistol small enough to fit in the palm of a hand. 

The Australian government has issued the number of weapons which were collected from the jurisdiction. From New South Wales 24,965 weapons were collected, while Queensland, Victoria, and Tasmania collected 16,000, 3,654 and 1,924 weapons respectively. The South Australia collected 2,648 weapons, Australian Capital Territory collected 709 weapons, Western Australia collected 1,242 weapons and Northern Territory collected 322 weapons.

According to the Australian government, the Amnesty commenced from 1 July to 30 September 2017, aimed at improving public safety by reducing the number of unregistered firearms and firearm-related articles in our community.
