Nine films competing for foreign-language film Oscar; India's Newton out of race

Los Angeles, December 15: High hopes of Indian audience gets diminished as the Bollywood film Newton goes out of Academy awards race. Rajkumar Rao –starrer political satire has not made to the shortlisted list of the Best Foreign Language Film category. Newton was selected as India’s official submission under the category in September. The Academy on Thursday announced the nine films that will compete for a nomination for the best foreign-language film Oscar.

 

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the short-list on Thursday. The short-listed films are: Chile's "A Fantastic Woman," Germany's "In the Fade," Hungary's "On Body and Soul," Israel's "Foxtrot," Lebanon's "The Insult," Russia's "Loveless," Senegal's "Felicite," South Africa's "The Wound" and Sweden's "The Square."

Among these films, some of have made to other glorious international awards also. Ruben Ostlund's Swedish art-world satire, The Square has won the Palme d'Or at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Andrey Zvyagintsev directed Russian drama Loveless won the Cannes Jury Prize.

The 90th Oscars will be held on next year’s March 4, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center and will be televised live on ABC. Nominations will be announced Tuesday, January 23. The shortlist of films was chosen from a record 92 titles submitted by several countries.
