Mumbai, December 25: “Depression”, this word has been tormenting lakhs of people worldwide. Depress is not a mere syndrome but a threat to mental health. While we always considered depression as a mood swing, it is a real illness. Depression can be treated and cured. Here are some easy tips as advocated by World Health Organization (WHO) to take care of depressed people or self-depression.

If you want to help someone make it clear that you want to help, listen without judgment, and offer support. Many times, as we become judgmental to someone’s problem, they don’t open up. Everyone goes through the different situation. So while listening to someone’s problem keep it in mind everyone is different in nature. An unconditional support can really help a person who is already drowned in utter sadness.

You can encourage them to seek professional help when available. Offer to accompany them to appointments, if they are not in proper condition to go alone. Because ultimately a professional can diagnosis and come out with a proper solution.

If medication is prescribed, help them to take it as prescribed. Depressed people sometimes deny taking medicines and enters a denial mode. Make them understand the importance of medication. Don’t hurry up, just wait patiently for the result; it usually takes a few weeks to feel better.

Help them with everyday tasks and to have regular eating and sleeping patterns. While you are weighed down with sadness, long-term stress, nothing can cheer you up; it is not easy to even maintain daily routine properly. Disrupted lifestyle can make the situation worse.

Encourage regular exercise and social activities. The more someone is having a community feeling, the fewer self-miseries can bother someone. In addition to that, a daily workout is always good for depressed people as exercise helps to secrete happy hormones.

Encourage them to focus on the positive, rather than the negative. Above all, try to drive their attention towards positive things to give them a happy vibe.

If they are thinking about self-harm, or have already intentionally harmed themselves, do not leave them alone. Seek further help from the emergency services or a health-care professional. In the meantime, remove items such as medications, sharp objects, and firearms.

While taking care of others, we sometimes forget about ourselves. So, self-care is always mandatory. Be happy, make happy!
