JK police eliminates JeM top commander Noor Mohammad Tantray in Pulwama

Srinagar, December 26: Security forces on Tuesday morning eliminated a top Jaish-e- Mohammad terrorist named Noor Mohammad after a fierce encounter that took place in Pulwama district of Jammu and Kashmir. The search operation is still underway and the body along with arms and ammunition are recovered from the encounter site. 

Top Jaish-e-Mohammad (JeM) terrorist Noor Mohammad Tantray who is considered the brain behind the terror outfit's revival in the Valley, was killed in a fierce encounter with security forces in Samboora area of Pulwama district in Jammu and Kashmir. The search operation is still underway. The body of slain terrorist along with arms and ammunition including one AK-56, pistol and magazines were recovered.

The Inspector General of Police Muneer Khan said, "The divisional commander of JeM, Noor Mohammad Tantray alias Noor Trali, was killed in a gun battle with security forces in Samboora area of Pulwama." He said that the body of Tantray, who stood at just three feet tall, was recovered along with one weapon this morning.

IGP Muneer Khan also termed the killing a "significant breakthrough" for the security forces and said the slain terrorist was convicted in a case registered in 2003 in Delhi. “He was serving a sentence at Central Jail Srinagar and was out on parole in 2015,” the IGP added.


The encounter took place after the crack team of Jammu and Kashmir police cordoned off a house after getting a specific input of presence of two or more terrorists. Three-feet-tall and 47-year-old, Tantray was the divisional commander of the Jaish-e- Mohammad terror outfit was killed in a fierce gun battle.

Noor Mohammad Tantray was just three feet tall and was the brain behind the terror outfit's revival in the Valley. The 47-year-old was wanted in various terror incidents earlier this year, including a suicide attack at the BSF camp at Srinagar airport. He was also serving a sentence at Central Jail Srinagar and was out on parole in 2015.


Noor Mohammad Tantray remained in Tral at South Kashmir and became a major overground worker of the JeM in the region. In July 2017, after the Aripal encounter in which three JeM terrorists were killed, Tantray went underground and soon became the key man of the terror outfit in coordinating and organizing attacks at different places.

He was one of the chief architects of the attack on BSF camp near Srinagar airport in October and was also wanted in a number of terror attacks in the south and central Kashmir. Tantray hailed from Tral area of south Kashmir and his death is being seen as a blow to the terror group as he was the key man in reviving the JeM in south and central Kashmir.

Earlier, in this month, security forces eliminated three terrorists and arrested one belonged to Lashkar-e-Toiba (LeT) terror outfit in Qazigund area of Kulgam district. Security forces have led a massive war against terrorism and terrorists in the inner parts of Jammu-Kashmir and forward areas. Therefore, Anti-Terrorism operation is continued with such a speed that more than 200 terrorists are eliminated by Indian troops in a time period of a year.
