Special investigation into attacks of UN peacekeepers in Congo announced

Kinshasa, January 7: While UN peacekeepers take up one of the toughest jobs in the world to save people in conflicting regions, their deaths go unnoticed often. Recently, 15 'blue helmets' were killed and dozens wounded in the deadliest single assault on a UN mission in Congo. Now, UN is launching a special probe into the nasty attack.

At least 15 UN Peacekeepers were killed in attack on United Nations personnel of the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) on 2017’s 7th December. Later UN Secretary-General António Guterres described as the “worst attack” on UN peacekeepers or UN “blue helmets” in recent history. United Nations mission in the Congo (DRC) paid tribute to the martyred Tanzanian peacekeepers.

Secretary-General António Guterres on Friday announced the appointment of veteran UN peacekeeping official Dmitry Titov of Russia to lead a Special Investigation into recent attacks on peacekeeper. The probe will especially focus on 7th December attack.

The UN said the special probe will examine the circumstances surrounding these attacks, evaluate overall preparedness and response to the events and provide recommendations on how to prevent such attacks from occurring in the future or when they do occur, from having such lethal consequences.
