Pyeongchang, February 22: While winter games are almost unknown to a large crowd, Norway's Marit Bjoergen deserves recognition. With 14 medals in Winter Olympics, she has become the most successful athlete in Winter Olympic history on Wednesday.

She has outclassed Norwegian cross-country great Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, who has 13 in biathlon. After winning a bronze in the team ski sprint, the 37 years old athlete broke a tie she had with biathlete Ole Einar Bjoerndalen.

"It's hard to understand, actually," Bjoergen said. "I think I'll need to have time to myself and look at me and look how I've been able to do this. It's still hard to understand it when I'm standing here."

In total Olympic history, she is the second most successful athlete, either in summer games or winter games. Soviet gymnast Larisa Latynina with 18 medals only stands ahead of her. The 37-year-old Bjoergen has now won four medals at the Pyeongchang Games. She took gold in the women’s 4×5-kilometer relay, silver in the 15-kilometer skiathlon and bronze in the 10-kilometer freestyle.

Other than Olympics, she has succeeded in other events too. After winning 112 events on the World Cup circuit, she is placed atop the all-time Cross-Country World Cup rankings.
