Syrian forces conducted series of airstrikes in rebel-held eastern Ghouta province; 59 civilians killed

Damascus, February 9: At least 59 civilians were killed while 139 others were injured in the rebel-held region eastern Ghouta province, a besieged pocket of satellite towns and farms near the Syrian capital of Damascus after the Government forces launched a series of airstrikes on Thursday.

 

Notably, Syrian government launched a massive air strike in the rebel-held region eastern Ghouta province, a besieged pocket of satellite towns and farms near the Syrian capital of Damascus in which as many as 59 civilians were killed including 15 children while 139 others were injured.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said on that the on the fourth day of attacks against a rebel-held region yesterday, pro-Government warplanes pounded various parts of eastern Ghouta, a besieged pocket of satellite towns and farms near the Syrian capital of Damascus. However, there was no immediate comment from the Syrian army.

The Monitor also said that the death toll rose after the bombing of a market in the village of Arbin, where air strikes killed 21, including nine children and three women. Meanwhile, the Red Cross in Syria has expressed distress at the deteriorating security and humanitarian conditions in the area. On the other side, the United Nations called for an immediate humanitarian ceasefire in Syria for at least a month. The Syrian government has repeatedly said it only targets militants.

Earlier, in the month of January this year, the US-led coalition fighting Islamic State terrorists have killed around 150 terrorists in air strikes in the Syrian middle Euphrates River Valley. The United States has led an international coalition conducting air strikes against Islamic State since 2014. The coalition has also said in the past that fewer than 1,000 Islamic State fighters remain in Iraq and Syria, but that the terrorist group still remains a threat.

However, the battle between US-led coalition and Islamic State terror group has made civilians to suffer extensively as at least 800 civilians are killed so far Iraq and Syria.

Syria is affected by the civil war since many years due to which thousands of civilians lost their lives while millions were displaced. Over 80,000 foreigners from countries such as Tunisia, Libya, Saudi Arabia, Germany, France and the Caucasus have been recruited and traveled to Syria between 2013 and 2016 to fight alongside ISIS.
