New York, May 16: The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) held an emergency meeting on Tuesday to discuss the violence along the Gaza-Israeli border. UNSC has also called for calm along the border of the Gaza Strip following Monday’s deadly clashes.

The UN Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Nickolay Mladenov, briefing the Council said, “Israel has a responsibility to calibrate its use of force, to not use lethal force, except as a last resort, under imminent threat of death or serious injury. It must protect its borders from infiltration and terrorism, but it must do so proportionally.”

The violence, which broke out after the opening of US embassy in Jerusalem, claimed the lives of more than 50 Palestinians on Monday. More than 2400 people were injured in the mass protests.

According to the Associated Press, the draft statement categorically stated the expression of outrage and sorrow at the killings, sought an independent and transparent investigation into the incident and called on all sides to exercise restraint.

But the other side of the coin, the Israel Defense Forces said around 40,000 Gazans were demonstrating in 12 locations along the border at the riots’ peak. It said thousands more were gathered at points several hundred meters from the fence.

The Israel Defense Forces in a statement accused Hamas, which controls Gaza, of leading a terrorist operation and inciting protesters who had amassed by the border fence with Israel to conduct what Israel described as terror attacks.
