Mumbai, June 7: As the soothing muddy smell of mother earth sways the air, Mumbai monsoon has arrived with a bang and expects to downpour this weekend. Mumbai is set to face heavy rain with the weather forecast expecting monsoon to hit the city in 48 hours, at least three days before schedule. The weather office has predicted, "really heavy rains" that will "affect normal life" in Mumbai beginning Thursday.

It has been raining intermittently in the city since Saturday but after the start of the monsoon, the rain is likely to become heavier over the weekend until next Monday. "Extremely heavy rainfall" is expected in parts of Mumbai, the MeT office has warned.

According to Skymet CEO, Jatin Singh, “Sustained heavy raining will be coming for a week starting on the 6th of June. (June) 8/9/10 can be extremely heavy. Warnings should be issued now. Just stay indoors."

However, it is noted that good rain and thundershowers continued over Southern parts of Konkan and Goa and Madhya Maharashtra. In fact, moderate to heavy rainfall also occurred over Vidarbha region of Maharashtra during the same time frame.

According to Skymet, a "cyclonic circulation" is forming over Konkan and Goa and it will gradually move north along the Maharashtra coast. On Saturday and yesterday, much of the city received moderate to heavy rain in what was described as "pre-monsoon showers". The rain, which struck the financial capital along with thunder and lightning, affected trains and flights, caused massive traffic jams and left some neighborhoods without electricity.

Each year, the season portends a nightmare for the citizens of Mumbai, since rain floods the city and chokes up major roads.
The southwest monsoon hit the country's south tip ahead of schedule this year and reached Kerala on May 29 instead of the usual June 1.
