Dharamshala, July 13: Taking a step forward in curbing the menace of drugs, the Himachal Pradesh and Punjab police on Thursday jointly launched a special drive to crackdown on drug smugglers in the Kangra district that borders Punjab.

Notably, the special drive was being conducted with the active participation and assistance of both Himachal and Pathankot police within the jurisdiction of police station Nurpur and Indora to nab drug smugglers.

The police officials of two states have jointly launched a massive search operation in hotels, restaurants and guest houses situated in the area of Nurpur, Kandwal, Indora, Damtal and Dhangupeer to nab all the drug smugglers or traffickers.

Talking to the media, Himachal’s Superintendent of police Santosh Patial said that arresting people involved in cross-border smuggling had become a challenging task due to border issues and that many times police teams had missed the catch after the drug traders crossed the border.

He said, “We asked the Punjab Police in adjacent districts to cooperate with us to end the menace of drugs, to which they have agreed and a joint operation was started from today.”

The move comes days after few videos of Himachal youths under influence of drugs went viral. The state police had till May 31 seized 229 kg charas, 4 kg opium and 263 kg of poppy husk.
