The last incident of volcanic eruption took place in September 2011. Hence the agency has raised the volcanic alert level from 2 to 3 on a scale of 5. The level 3 means people should not approach the volcano.

"We were hit by accommodation cancellations six years ago. I hope (the eruption) will not affect the autumn outing season," a local tourism official expressed his concern.

Japan Meteorological Agency forecast says the crater will continue to emit ash and potentially volcanic rocks through Friday. Depending on wind conditions and altitude the locations of risk will be declared.
