Kandla, October 5: India’s largest serving port to Northern Hinterland, Kandla Port, has been renamed after Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay, who pledged his life to the service of the nation. This port will be known as Deendayal Port. The decision was taken by the union cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday.
After the due consideration, in special cases, the government has renamed the ports after the great leaders in the past and that also. Generally, the ports in India are named after the city or town in which these are situated.
By renaming Kandla Port as "Deendayal Port, Kandla", a grateful nation would be remembering the invaluable contributions made by one of the greatest sons of India, Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay. This will inspire the People of Gujarat, particularly the Youth, who may not be fully aware of the contributions made by the great leader.
Located in Kandla of Gujarat, Deendayal Port's journey began in 1931 with the construction of RCC Jetty by Maharao Khengarji. After partition, Deendayal Port's success story has continued and it rises to the No. 1 Port in India in the year 2007-08 and since then retained the position for the nine consecutive years. On 31.03.2016, Deendayal Port created history by handling 100 MMT cargos in a year - the first Major Port to achieve the milestone. This port is going to be the Green port under initiatives of the mechanical engineering department. In 2016-17 6 MW wind power project will be installed and it will be the First Indian major port to install a wind power project. Solar rooftop (0.175kwp) project will be awarded during the year 2016-17 and LED lights will be installed as an energy-saving measure. This port has a storage facility of 12 dry cargo berths with the quantity length of 2532 meters with six oil Jetties. It provides a Regular Feeder Service to the middle east, Iran, and Coastal areas.Background: On the public demand for changing the name of 'Kandla Port' as 'Deendayal Port, Kandla' came from many areas of the Gujarat especially from Kucchh. Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay (25.9.1916 - 1.2.1968) was a prominent leader, who pledged his life to the service of the nation. He devoted his entire life serving the nation and worked among the masses and dedicated and sacrificed his life for the upliftment of the Poor & Working Class at the same time. His actions were based on the principles of ‘Integral Humanism’. Throughout his life, he worked tirelessly for Indianisation of democracy, honoring the public opinion, selflessness, and respect for law of the land. He dedicated his entire life to public service and was the epitome of simplicity, honesty and selfless service for the poor and down-trodden.
On the birth anniversary of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay was to be celebrated on 25th September 2017, the decision on renaming the Kandla port was felt to be an appropriate step.
