Mumbai, April 17: The open letter by film and music personalities appealing voters to choose a secular party is actually resulting into a ploy by the fraud accused activist Teesta Setalvad and the Aam Adami Party which is on a diminishing trail. Also it has exposed how the phony Secular population which speaks about tolerance and harmony but spread only hatred, is shrinking.

More than two dozen well known film and music personalities have appealed to the voters to elect a secular party in the Lok Sabha election. Govind Nihalani, Zoya Akhtar, Vishal Bhardwaj, Imtiaz Ali, Shubha Mudgal, Swara Bhaskar have signed an open letter urging the voters to "vote for the secular party, which is most likely to win in your constituency".

Notably some mentionable personalities like activist Teesta Setalvad and her husband Javed Anand, who are facing embarrassment due to the charge of using the riot victims’ fund for personal luxuries, mark their presence in this apparent anti- Modi, and anti-BJP circular, which is otherwise signed by the film personalities.

Interestingly the realisation that governance and corruption are lesser important has not came out all of a sudden. It is the raising inclination of voters towards the Bharatiya Janata Party and the visible Modi factor that has made the hidden “Left-Secular-AAP” element to come out in open to showing its so-called secular colours.

The letter is supposed to be a brainchild of writer Anjum Rajabali and endorsed by several Bollywood bigwigs, says though corruption and governance are "important issues" the country's secular character is "not negotiable".

The letter ‘undoubtedly’ clears that; corruption and governance are important issues but more important is, India’s ‘Secular Character’.

Some of the signatories of this appeal are writer director Imtaz Ali, Director Govind Nihlani, Writer-Director Vishal Bharadwaj, Zoya Akhtar, filmmakers Mahesh BhattKabir Khan, singer Shubha Mudgal and director Vijay Krishna Acharya, singer Shubha Mudgal.

Documentary maker Anand Patwardhan is a proud anti Hindutva activist. He is specialised in anti Modi protests calling him a ‘Shaitan’. Actor turned rights activist adita Das who compared Gujarat chief minister Narendra Modi with Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler are also amongst the signatories of the ‘Secular Appeal’.

The lame duck attempt of spewing venom against the BJP and its Prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi using the veil of “Secularism” is being badly worn out on the social media.

Tweeples are asking that those who have signed the Secular appeal are representatives of India’s film industry then who are personalities like Hema Malini, Dharmendra, Vinod Khanna, Paresh Rawal, Shatrughna Sinha, Vivek Oberai, Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher and many more who are clearly Modi supporters. Even megastars like Rajanikant and Amitabh Bacchan who is a brand ambassador for Gujarat tourism have praised Narendra Modi and his style of functioning.

Rajabali, who is a staunch supporter of the Aam Adami Party however, insists the celebrities have not appealed to the electors to vote for a particular party or person or taking sides. As per reports, talking to PTI, Rajabali said, “We are not asking or appealing to people to vote for a particular party or person, we are just saying vote for a person or party that is secular. We are not taking sides. Secularism is an important factor. It is the central character of our Indian society. We are appealing to people to keep this in mind while voting.”

Another secular advocate director Mahesh Bhat said that it is not what we meant (anti-modi and pro-Congress), that is not the interpretation. We are appealing to people to vote for someone who is secular. Though majority of people in this country are Hindus but there are Muslims, Parsis, Christians and others as well.

The initiative by Rajabali and others, however, has failed to mark its impact and gain support.

Director -Filmmaker Madhur Bhandarkar has objected such attempt of dividing film industry in the name of protecting secularism.

Madhur has even tweeted that “Launching a personal attack on a man who has done more for his state than any other leader, reeks of conspiracy & unwarranted paranoia. Let's hope better sense prevails and our film industry elects @narendramodi with a thumping majority. It's time India got a visionary leader,” he said.

The pathetic attempt of pitching for ‘Secular cards” has poorly boom-ranged on the signatories, which exposed the naked truth that how the Secular-Sect is shrinking. Similarly It also showed that the iconic legends of Indian film industry are there in support of Narendra Modi and BJP which has make India discuss nationalism and governance despite of outdated tunes of secularism.
