Darjeeling, October 1: The queen of hills Darjeeling has been going through a miserable time since Gorkha Janmukti Morcha launched an agitation for a separate state on the basis of different language. While a part of GJM agreed to talk to State government for a political solution another part including GJM chief Bimal Gurung continued the agitation. The West Bengal Police on Wednesday sealed the Gorkha Janmukti Morcha’s central office in Darjeeling’s Singmari, a stronghold of Gurung.
"We have sealed the head office of the GJM at Singhmari under the instructions of the district magistrate. The land on which the office has been constructed is government land. The land had been illegally encroached upon by the GJM as per records. So we sealed the office," Darjeeling police superintendent Akhilesh Chaturvedi said.
In this year June a fresh violence started after Mamata Banerjee’s announcement of making the Bengali language compulsory as the third language. Though later it was clarified that the hill area would be exempted from the decision it could not prevent the violent agitation.
