Counting of votes for all 16 mayoral seats in Uttar Pradesh begins

Lucknow, December 1: The counting of votes for all 652 urban local bodies in Uttar Pradesh (UP Nagar Nikay Chunav) began on Friday at 8 AM. Notably, the voting for the three-phase elections for urban local bodies in Uttar Pradesh took place on November 22, 26 and 29 respectively. 

Amid tight security, the counting of votes of all 652 Urban Local Bodies is being held at 334 centres. The counting started at 8 AM and results are expected by today evening. Elaborate security arrangements are in place. Central Para Military Forces are deployed n and around the centers. CCTV cameras have been set up for close monitoring of counting and arrangements have also been made for webcasting of the counting process.

Results will be updated by the returning officers on the State Election Commission`s official website immediately after its completion and result will be communicated to the candidates through SMS on their registered mobile numbers. It will also be communicated to the General Electorates through SMS.

However, the elections were held for 16 Nagar Nigam (Municipal Corporation), 118 Nagar Palika Parishad (Municipal Council) and 438 Nagar panchayat bodies. The first phase of the Uttar Pradesh Civic Polls 2017 held on November 23 of this year in 24 districts registered a total of 52.59 percent of voting.

The second phase of Civic Polls held on November 26 for 25 districts that included six municipal corporations, 51 municipal councils and 132 Nagar panchayats registered a total of 53 percent of voting. While a total of 49.3 percent voting was registered in the third phase of polls that took place on November 29 in 26 districts.

Importantly, the UP urban local body elections (is being seen as a litmus test for the CM Yogi Adityanath led government in the state. Meanwhile, the exit polls have given a massive win for Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). BJP had earlier won 10 out of 12 mayoral posts. This year, the number of mayoral posts has gone up to 16.
