PM Modi backs Sushma: Affirms that no stone left unturned to safely rescue Indians from Mosul
New Delhi, March 20: Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a tweet expressing his condolences over the killing of 39 Indians in Mosul by the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS), said that the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) tried its best to rescue all of them.
“The MEA and particularly my colleagues Sushma Swaraj and Gen VK Singh left no stone unturned in trying to trace and safely bring back those we lost in Mosul,” the PM said in a series of tweets.
He also underlined the efforts made by the government, especially by the Ministry of External Affairs, to trace and following leads concerning them.
He added that the government remains fully committed towards ensuring the safety of our sisters and brothers overseas.
In a statement in the Rajya Sabha earlier today, Union External Affairs minister Sushma Swaraj confirmed the deaths of the 39 missing Indians, saying that the DNA samples of 38 people had been matched by the Iraqi authorities. In the case of the 39th person, the matching was 70 per cent.
Swaraj also held a press briefing later in the afternoon where she did not give a direct reply to a volley of questions on when the Indians were killed.
The bodies could have been recovered only after Mosul was liberated from the ISIS, she said. Mosul city was liberated from terror syndicate ISIS in June last year.
