Mumbai: The violent protests against the CAA and the CAB in the many States of India has made everyone wonder if there is any support for the move at all. With so many celebrities and people from the film industry speaking out against the CAA, the voice of the common man was silent, it seemed. But Mumbai CST saw a special demonstration on the 19th December 2019, wherein a crowd of people spontaneously showed their support for the CAA brought out by the Government in power. It was special because it was not called by any one group of people or by any political party, but was held by the common man and by students from various colleges.

Students from various colleges had brought out banners showing their support to the Government for finally tabling the Citizenship Amendment Bill and passing it in Parliament. A group of conscious citizens who had been planning to show their support to the Government too joined them. Support to the Police of Delhi for the strict handling of the violent protesters who had stoned a school bus was one of the talking points. Another very important banner spoke about the injury the police personnel sustained while tackling the riots. The voice of the common man was for the first time heard, without reeking of any agenda. Voices rose together to show support for the betterment of the Nation.
Noted Filmmaker & Senior Activist, Ashoke Pandit said, "CAA is very necessary to save the country from infiltrators. It’s important for the internal security of the country. Every country in the World has strict rules to protect itself from the enemies within & Outside. Narendra Modi is fulfilling his promises as per the BJP’s manifesto. The Urban Naxals will not be allowed to fulfil their dreams to destabilise India. We will fight them on the streets."
Tanuja Rathod, a docile senior citizen from Andheri also showed her support for the peaceful rally. When asked why she had come, she said, “It is my country & I am happy that the Government is taking steps for the welfare of the Nation.”
“The recent spate of violent protests by some people in various states of our country, where people even resorted to stone-pelting and throwing of bombs, made the common man feel very anguished”, said Columnist & Author, Rati Hegde. She also said, “Probably for such people, the Country doesn’t come above everything else”
Social Activist & Columnist, Savio Rodrigues said, “It is a misconception that Christians do not view the CAA favourably. The steps taken by the current Government are for the betterment of the Nation and in favour of every citizen of this country.”

The students who were participating in the rally said that they wanted to show that not every student is violent and that protests were possible without causing any loss to property or Nation. It was a student’s duty to behave responsibly, they said in one voice.

Many people who attended expressed surprise that when the CAA referred to distressed people of other Nations who were seeking refuge in India, some people felt that it went against a particular community who were citizens of India. Even the NRC they felt would only drive away from the illegal residents of our country, who were a drain on the resources which should rightfully be used for the legal citizens of India.

It is entirely notable that the people who had joined the rally spontaneously to show their support did so because they all felt that it was a time that the ordinary man’s voice too should be heard. The peaceful rally and demonstration was attended by more than a thousand people on a working day. The Police were given chocolates and roses as a token of appreciation for keeping the city safe and as a goodwill gesture for the good work done by the Delhi.Police.
