Ravi’s flow of water into Pakistan can be reduced: CM Amrinder Singh rededicate Shahpurkandi Dam Project

Shahpur Kandi, March 8: Ravi river is one of the key rivers in Punjab. its water flows towards Pakistan which can be utilised for Punjab economy.  Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh rededicated the Shahpur Kandi Dam Project to the people of the state today at Shahpur Kandi. This project will be saving Punjab's water and protecting Punjab's future.


To power a new course for Punjab’s progress through a 5000-hectare increase in irrigated area. Power generation will increase up to 206 kilowatts. Drastic reduction in the flow of water towards Pakistan.

This will boost tourism and it will increase employment in Pathankot.


The government in December cleared a proposal to implement the Shahpur Kandi Dam Project in Punjab on the Ravi for which Central assistance of Rs 485.38 crore would be provided over five years from 2018-19 to 2022-23.

In December, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said: “The project was cleared by the Union Cabinet, which will minimise some of the water of the Ravi, currently going waste through the Madhopur Headworks downstream to Pakistan.”

Jaitley said the project would be implemented by the Punjab Government with Central assistance of Rs 485.38 crore and would be completed by June 2022. While giving nod for this project, he further said “an irrigation potential of 5,000-hectare area (ha) in Punjab and 32,173 ha in Jammu and Kashmir would be created. Funding for Central assistance shall be made through NABARD”.
