Welcoming new ideas, new decisions; first session of 17th Lok Sabha to begin on 17 June

New Delhi, June 1: As India witnessed the historical moment of Indian democracy, scripting history, Bharatiya Janata Party leader Narendra Modi was elected as the Prime Minister for the second consecutive term. Right after PM Modi and his council of ministers took oath to serve the nation, the 17th Lok Sabha session is set to begin on 17 June and will continue till 26 July.

 

Addressing a press briefing, Union Minister Prakash Javadekar informed that the Union Budget will be presented on 5 July. The speaker of the Lower House is likely to be appointed on 19 June.

President Ram Nath Kovind will address the joint sitting of the two houses of Parliament on the first day of the session. A pro-tem Speaker is also likely to be appointed the same day, before a final appointment. A pro-tem Speaker performs the duties of the office of the Speaker from the commencement of the sitting of the Lok Sabha till the election of the Speaker. They will administer the oath of office to all the newly elected members of Parliament.

Both houses will also take up the Motion of Thanks on which PM Modi will give his reply.

While the 16th Lok Sabha passed the critical Citizenship Amendment Bill in the Winter Session of Parliament in 2018, it awaits passage in the Rajya Sabha or the Upper House. The Bill is again likely to run into hurdles this term around, with majority of the members in Rajya Sabha, opposing the bill before it was even tabled in the House.
