Tehran, August 6: President of Iran Hassan Rouhani today said that Tehran favours talks with Washington only if the US lifts sanctions it has imposed on the Islamic republic.

Hassan Rouhani, Speaking at the foreign ministry after meeting with his top diplomat Mohammad Javad Zarif, said that Iran is ready for talks regardless of whether or not the US is a party to the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action or the 2015 nuclear deal. The Iranian foreign minister confirmed reports that he had turned down an offer from a US senator to meet President Donald Trump at the White House.
“Peace with Iran is the mother of all peace, war with Iran is the mother of all wars. A strait for a strait. It can’t be that the Strait of Hormuz is free for you and the Strait of Gibraltar is not free for us,” said Rouhani in his speech. Rouhani also reiterated that America's sanctions on his country are an act of "economic terrorism."

Tensions between Iran and the United States have soared since Trump announced last year that the US was withdrawing from the deal and began reimposing sanctions against the Islamic republic.
