Google removes Paytm app from Play Store citing policy violations

Bengaluru, September 18: In a major development, India's heavily used digital payments service Paytm, has been pulled down by Google from the Google Play Store for violating its gambling policies, meanwhile companies other apps like Paytm for Business, Paytm mall, Paytm Money, and a few more are still available for download.

After removing the app from the play store Google said, "We don’t allow online casinos/support any unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting. It includes if the app leads consumers to an external website that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to win real money/cash prizes." However, is still available on Apple App Store IOS. All existing users who have the app installed on their device can still use all services provided by the app.
 
The tech giant also reveals that an app that leads consumers to an external site that allows them to participate in paid tournaments to real money which clearly violates Play Store policies.
 
"When an app violates these policies, we notify the developer of the violation and remove the app from Google Play until the developer brings the app into compliance. And in the case where there are repeated policy violations, we may take more serious action which may include terminating Google Play Developer accounts. Our policies are applied and enforced on all developers consistently," Google added. Google also added that it has these policies to protect users from potential harm.
 
 
Paytm also confirm the news saying, “Paytm Android app is temporarily unavailable on Google’s Play Store for new downloads or updates.” The company adds that the Paytm app “will be back very soon” on the Play Store. “All your money is completely safe, and you can continue to enjoy your Paytm app as normal,” Paytm highlights.
 
Paytm is owned by an Indian company called One97 Communications Ltd, which was founded by Vijay Shekhar Sharma but the company had received massive funding from fintech firm Ant Financials, which is an ally of China's Alibaba group. Paytm is India’s most valuable startup & claims over 50 million monthly active users.
 
Moreover, Google has also issued warnings to multiple other apps, including popular streaming service Disney+ Hotstar, for displaying disclaimers before broadcasting advertisements related to online gambling. Google prohibits online casinos and other unregulated gambling apps that facilitate sports betting like Dream 11, MPL.Google is seemingly cracking down on online gambling apps looking to offer sports betting — something that is illegal in India.
