New Delhi, January 21: After Tandav, Amazon's other web series comes under the scanner of Supreme Court (SC) , as a bench headed by the Chief justice of India (CJI), SA Bobde on Thursday issued notices to the makers and producers of the web-series 'Mirzapur' and Amazon Prime Video.

Issuing the notice, SC has sought a response from the makers of the web-series and Over The Top (OTT) platform Amazon Prime Video.

It comes after a resident of Mirzapur, Sujeet Kumar Singh has filed a petition in the court saying that the web series has portrayed the Mirzapur in a very bad manner. He added this type of content tarnishes the cultural and historical image of the Mirzapur city and district.

"The said web series has shown every resident of Mirzapur as goon, vagabond, and adulterer. The said web series is filled with nudity, vulgarity, and abusive language," the plea said. The petition sought a direction that the government of India set up a core screening committee for web series, films, or other programs that are directly released online platforms.

"Ministry of Information and Broadcasting must make a certificate from a government authority mandatory before releasing any web series, movies, or program on OTT platforms," the plea said. Such movies/ web series, the petitioner contended, is in clear violation of Supreme Court dictum to block publication and transmission of obscene material in any electronic form.

The petitioner, therefore, prayed that rules and regulations be framed to regulate content on OTT platforms and ensure that no such movie/ show is released without a certificate from the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting.

On Wednesday, BJP Secretary and Lok Sabha MP from Kaushambi in Uttar Pradesh, Vinod Sonkar demanded action on the makers of the web series.
