Srinagar, October 14: Breaking the spine of the Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist group, the security forces gunned down a top commander of the JeM during a gunbattle in the Tral area of Avantipura, in South Kashmir's Pulwama district. He was killed during a joint operation of J&K Police, CRPF, and the Indian Army.
As per the J&K police, the security forces launched the search and cordon operation following the inputs about the presence of terrorists in the area. During the search operation, the militants were given repeated opportunities to surrender. However, the militant open fired on the security personnel to which the security forces retaliated.
The terrorist has been identified as Shamus-ud-din Sofi alias ShamSofi. He was among the most-wanted Jaish commanders operating in the Kashmir Valley. Sofi was active as a militant since June 2019. He was also part of groups involved in several terror cases, including attacks on security establishments and atrocities on civilians.
IGP Kashmir Vijay Kumar said, "He (Sham Sofi) was the top local commander of the Jaish-e-Mohammed. He was first arrested in 2004 & spent two years in jail under PSA. He became active after coming out of jail."
Sofi was first arrested in 2004 and detained under Public Safety Act for aiding terror activities. Sofi was arrested for two months and then released on bail. Sofi was again arrested in another case in 2007. In 2008, he was detained under PSA as he continued his anti-national activities before being released after the Jammu and Kashmir high court order on bail. In 2019, Sofi left his home and joined the ranks of JeM, and was active in the region since then.
Sofi also lured several young people to join terrorism. He was involved in two cases of civilian killings -- of Mohammad Ayoub Ahenger in 2020 and Shakeela in 2021, states the document.
It is worth to be noted that, in the last 72 hours, the security forces have killed eight militants in five separate encounters in the Valley. So far, 121 militants, including top commanders of various militant outfits, have been killed in Kashmir this year.
