Chennai, December 28: A functionary of the Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam's (AMMK) Nagapattinam unit was arrested on Monday (December 26) over an internet meme that allegedly trolled the Tamil Nadu Sports department after Udhayanidhi Stalin was made the minister in charge of the same.
The action was based on the complaint filed by the DMK IT wing leader from Vedaranyam.
AMMK's Senthilkumaran alias CSC Senthil posted a meme on his Facebook account on December 16, Friday. The troll drew inspiration from the Tamil movie 'Gentleman' alongside a caption that read, "New Sports to be introduced in Tamil Nadu". Although Udhayanidhi Stalin's name was not directly mentioned, it was taken as humour not in good taste.
Meanwhile, AMMK's founding General Secretary TTV Dhinakaran condemned the arrest over Twitter. "Nagapattinam District Corporation Environmental Protection and Awareness Division Secretary Mr CSC Senthilkumaran has been arrested in a false case under the autocratic DMK regime. I urge him to be released immediately.
Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Tamil Nadu chief minister MK Stalin, assumed office as the minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development on December 14, Wednesday. Senthilkumaran's post was based on this development as the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) was criticised by its political rivals for promoting dynasty politics in the state.
“Definitely there will be criticisms. I can respond to them only through my actions. Similar criticisms were made when I was made DMK’s youth wing secretary and MLA," The New Indian Express (TNIE) reported Udhayanidhi as saying about the "family ticket" criticism.
