New Delhi, Jan 18: The Election Commission of India (ECI) has announced the election program for the three northeastern states of Tripura, Meghalaya and Nagaland today.
 

Addressing a press conference Chief Election Commissioner Rajiv Kumar said that the state of Tripura will go to polls on Feb 16 in a single phase while the two states of Meghalaya and Nagaland will be voting on Feb 27. The counting of votes and declaration of results will be held on March 2, he said.

All three state assemblies have 60 seats each for which elections will be held. The tenure of the present assemblies ends on March 12 (Tripura), March 15 (Meghalaya) and March 22 (Nagaland). Altogether 2.28 lakh voters in these three states will exercise their franchise to elect the new houses.

CEC Rajiv Kumar accompanied by Election Commissioners Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel had toured the three poll-bound states to review the election preparations. The election schedule has been decided taking into consideration the Board Examinations and the movement of the security forces.



Currently the BJP is ruling the state of Tripura besides being a partner in the government in Nagaland with National Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) in Nagaland and with National People's Party (NPP) in Meghalaya. With the declaration of the election schedule the Model Code of Conduct has come into force in these three states.

Around 2.28 lakh voters have been added in these three states; there are 2600 voters in the 100 plus years of age while 97,000 are in the age bracket of 80 to 100 years, the CEC said. The total number of voters in these three states is close to 62.8 lakh who will vote in the coming assembly polls. Out of the total polling stations, 376 will be completely managed by the women staff, the CEC informed.

Over 28 lakh voters in Tripura alone: According to the election commission list of voters the total number of voters in Tripura is 28,13,478 showing a net increase of 2.4 lakh new voters since the 2018 elections. Chief electoral officer Kiran Dinkarrao Gitte said Friday that the final rolls were published Thursday after the summary revision that started on November 9 last year ended

Among the total voters 14,14,576 are male and 13,98,825 are female while 77 are transgender voters. 65,044 are the first time voters including 34,704 males, 30,328 female and 2 transgender voters. The number of voters above 80 years is 38,039 while there are 679 centenarian voters.
