Jewish community were seen pleading for help after two Jewish facilities in Montreal, Canada were attacked by assailants. The incident is said to have happened on Thursday (9th November).
Two Jewish schools. Yeshiva Gedolah and Talmud Torah Elementary School were attacked by assailants who opened fire at the schools in a deliberate attempt.
Police on Thursday said they were investigating overnight shootings at two Jewish schools in the Côte-des-Neiges neighbourhood after staff reported finding bullet holes in the front doors of the schools. Staff members discovered bullet holes on the exterior of the buildings when they arrived Thursday morning. Nobody was inside at the time of the shootings, police said.
This attack comes days after the the violent confrontation between the pro-Israel and pro-Palestinian groups at Concordia University. Earlier on Monday (6th November), a West Island synagogue and Jewish community center were targeted by firebombs.
On Wednesday, a violent altercation at Concordia University in Montreal between people aligned with opposing sides of the conflict in Israel and Gaza resulted in injuries and an arrest.
Following the attack,
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau condemned the attack. “I know emotions are high, and people are scared. But attacking each other is not who we are as Canadians,” the prime minister said on Thursday.
“If anywhere in the world is going to start building the kinds of understandings that we’re going to need to see peaceful resolution in the Middle East ... it starts in a place like Canada,” he said.
It should be noted that since the war broke out between Israel and Hamas, Toronto, which has the largest Jewish population and Muslim populations in Canada, has witnessing “very significant rise” in hate crimes. For most of October, reports more than doubled compared with the same period last year.
