BJP secured a landslide victory in the state elections. In a significant blow to the Trinamool Congress, the BJP won the West Bengal Assembly elections, winning 206 seats in the 294-member Assembly and ending Mamata Banerjee's 15-year rule. Mamata Banerjee dealt with a double blow on May 4 as she was defeated by her aide-turned-rival, BJP Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari in her home constituency, Bhabanipur, by a margin of over 15,000 votes.
