West Bengal Police on Monday, June 22, seized approximately three kilograms of gold jewellery from Tina Bhowmik Saha, a woman reportedly linked to former Bidhannagar Municipal Chairman and former TMC MLA Sabyasachi Dutta. As per the reports, the raid formed part of a continuing investigation into an alleged extortion case in which Dutta is implicated. The recovered gold has been estimated at a current market value of Rs 4.3 crore.

The search operation was conducted late Monday night in Kishorepur by officers from Bidhannagar North Police Station, aided by personnel from the local Karimpur Police Station. Dutta, who was recently arrested on extortion charges, was brought to the site by investigators as part of their ongoing inquiry. Authorities then proceeded to search the ancestral home of Saha, identified as a close associate of the former legislator, during which the gold jewellery was recovered from the premises.

The discovery has redirected the focus of the investigation toward establishing the origin of the jewellery. Investigators are now poring over ownership records, financial transactions, and related documentary evidence to determine how the gold was acquired and whether it bears any connection to criminal activity. Authorities are also probing whether other individuals may have been a party to transactions involving the recovered items.

The seizure fits into a broader pattern of investigations targeting political figures across West Bengal. Law enforcement agencies have been scrutinising allegations of financial misconduct, extortion, and other offences linked to political leaders and party workers, with search operations and evidence gathering intensifying across multiple active cases. No further arrests or charges stemming directly from the gold recovery have been announced as yet.

Separately, the Enforcement Directorate conducted raids across seven properties associated with TMC MLA Madan Mitra in connection with an alleged municipal recruitment scam, a search operation that stretched over 11 hours. Meanwhile, Abhishek Banerjee is contending with summonses from both the ED and the CID across three distinct cases, encompassing an alleged recruitment scam, a signature forgery matter, and a hate speech investigation.
