Hyderabad, December 2: Government of Andhra Pradesh has passed the bill of 5% reservation the the Kapu Community in the state. The Kapu Community was added to the Backward Classes (BCs) Today. This will benefit the community in government jobs, educational institutions etc.

The bill extends 5% quota to Kapus under the Backward Castes (BC) 'F' Category. The state already has 29% reservation for Backward Castes under A, B, C, D and E categories. Apart from this, 15% and 6% reservations exist for Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), respectively.

With the quota for Kapus, the total reservation in the state goes up to 55%, beyond the 50% cap set by the Supreme Court for reservations.

Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh N Chandrababu Naidu tweeted in Telugu which means “I retained the word given during the pada yatra. Today, we have made unanimous decision for the people in the state by bringing Kapus to BSc. We have introduced the bill to apply 5 per cent reservation in the FFS category to the CPI.”

Kapus are a predominant caste in coastal Andhra, particularly in East and West Godavari districts with a powerful political backing. The community had staged a protest for reservation in January last year in East Godavari district, but the demonstration turned violent and protestors burnt a train and vandalised a railway station.
