New Delhi, June 26: Taking a pledge to weed out illegal migrants entering the country, the state of Assam rolled out the National Register of Citizens draft. With this the state on Wednesday published the additional list to the draft National Register of Citizens (NRC) mentioning the names of 1,02,462 persons excluded from the NRC.

The additional list contains the names of the individuals who were included in the final draft NRC released on July 30, 2018, however, their names were eventually not found eligible to be included in the list, the NRC authorities said. It was published by authorities at 10 am for public view at designated NRC seva kendras, the office of the deputy commissioners, SDOs (circle) and circle officers.

One can also access the list online at www.nrcassam.nic.in.

As per the online list, it highlights the names of ineligible people as "excluded in additional list." Meanwhile, the names of other citizens remain the same. However, the list does not mention the results of the disposal of claims and objections. The NRC draft list released in July last year left out the names of 40 lakh people. Currently, the process of claims and objections is being executed by the authorities.

People have been found "ineligible" for various reasons, including that they may be doubtful voters, or declared foreigners, or persons with cases pending in foreigners tribunals or they might have been appearing as a witness in hearings organised for disposal of claims and objections, the NRC authorities were quoted as saying by The Telegraph.

The deputy commissioners, who also work as the district registrars of citizen registration (DRCR), have also been ordered to put in place adequate security arrangements at the venues.

In a letter to the DRCRs of all districts, the state coordinator, Assam, NRC said, "As such, they need not be disappointed or panic as they still have a chance to get their names included in the final NRC if they are able to prove their eligibility." Those persons who find their names mentioned in the additional list will be allowed a chance to make claims.
