New Delhi, Dec 2: India on Tuesday took strong exception to the views aired by the Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau voicing concerns over the farmers’ agitation. The spokesman of the Ministry of External Affairs said that the Canadian leadership’s comments were “ill-informed”.
Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had said that his country has contacted Indian authorities “through multiple means” to express concern about the protesting farmers.
The MEA Spokesman Anurag Shrivastava said that the comments by the Canadian leadership were “ill-informed” and “unwarranted”. They were pertaining to the internal affairs of a democratic country, he added.
The Canadian PM had said n a video message that the protests by the farmers in India were “concerning”. “We are all very worried about family and friends... Canada will always be there to defend the rights of peaceful protesters,” Trudeau had said, announcing that Canada has reached out to the Government of India regarding the protests. Canada has a sizeable and influential diaspora of migrants from Punjab.
In response, to the Canadian Prime Minister’s comments, Srivastava said, “It is also best that diplomatic conversations are not misrepresented for political purposes.”
