India’s first sanctuary for endangered Slender Loris to come up in this state; Know here-

New Delhi, Oct 13: The Tamil Nadu government has notified the first Indian sanctuary for the endangered Slender Loris in Karur and Dindigul districts. The announcement was made by the Chief Minister’s Office on Wednesday.
 
Slender Loris is small nocturnal mammals that largely spend their lives on trees. Native to southern India and Sri Lanka, the Slender Loris is an endangered animal as per the International Union for the Conservation of Nature(IUCN).

A total of 11,806 hectares in the forest areas of the Karur and Dindigul districts will be merged to form the Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary, the first of its kind in India. These mammals are also protected under Schedule I of the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
 
 
“Happy to announce that the Government of Tamil Nadu has notified India’s first “Kadavur Slender Loris Sanctuary” covering an area of 11,806 hectares in Karur & Dindigul Districts. The sanctuary will play an important role in conservation of Slender Loris and yet another milestone in TN's conservation efforts," the CMO of Tamil Nadu tweeted.
 
 
In recent months, the Tamil Nadu government had also announced the notification of India's first Dugong Conservation reserve in the Palk bay, the narrow strip of sea that connect India's Tamil Nadu and the Indian Ocean littoral nation Sri Lanka. In addition to this, Bird sanctuaries, Elephant reserves etc. have also been notified during the last year and a half.
