As per the latest report, a man in Karnataka’s Koppal attacked a Gulbarga Electricity Supply Company Limited (GESCOM) employee when he was asked to pay his power dues.

It should be noted, among the five 'guarantees' that the Congress party announced is the offer of 200 units of power a month to every household. During campaigning for the May 10 Assembly elections in Karnataka, the Congress repeatedly said it would give a stamp of approval for these 'guarantees' in the maiden cabinet meeting on the first day of its assuming power in the State.

The incident came to light after a video of it went viral on social media. In the 16-second video, the man in traditional attire can be seen slapping the electricity company staffer more than once. He can also be seen hurling abuse at him.

The villager who was identified as Chandrashekar Hiremat, a resident of Kukanapalli in Koppal, was arrested after the video of the incident went viral.

Police said the electricity company employee had gone to disconnect Hiremat’s power supply as he had not paid his dues, adding up to over Rs 9,000 for the past 6 months. Manjunath’s colleague recorded the incident on camera and filed a case against Hiremat at the Munirabad Police Station. The accused also tried to attack Manjunath’s colleague for recording a video.

Last week, another video surfaced on the internet, wherein a group of villagers were seen allegedly refusing to pay their electricity bill citing Congress’ pre-poll ‘free- electricity’ promise. The video was said to be from Karnataka’s Jaalikatte area.
