Indian music had a momentous night at the 2024 Grammys, with Shakti, the fusion band led by Shankar Mahadevan and Zakir Hussain, taking home the coveted Best Global Music Album award for their latest release, This Moment. This victory marks a significant recognition of Indian music on the global stage.

Shakti, known for its masterful blend of Indian and Western musical influences, impressed the judges with their eight-track album "This Moment". The album features the combined talents of renowned musicians: John McLaughlin on guitar synth, Zakir Hussain on tabla, Shankar Mahadevan on vocals, V Selvaganesh on percussion, and Ganesh Rajagopalan on violin. Their nomination alongside established artists like Susana Baca, Bokante, Burna Boy, and Davido speaks volumes about their musical prowess.
 
This Moment is Shakti's first new album in more than 45 years. The album was released on June 30, 2023, and was reportedly recorded separately by each member of the band. The band won the prestigious award after defeating artists like Bokante, Susana Baca, Davido and Burna Bay.
 
 
 
Mahadevan, who took the stage alongside Rajagopalan and Selvaganesh, gave a shout-out to McLaughlin and Hussain. While McLaughlin gave the ceremony a miss, Hussain was backstage as he had won another Grammy.
In his speech, Shankar Mahadevan thanked his wife for her constant support. “Thank you boys and thank you, god, family, friends and India. We are proud of you India. Last but not the least, I’d like to dedicate this award to my wife whom every note of my music is dedicated to,” Shankar said.

 
The excitement didn't stop there a double Win for Hussain:

 
Zakir Hussain's talent shone even brighter as he bagged another Grammy for Best Global Music Performance for his contribution to "Pashto." He collaborated with Bela Fleck, Edgar Meyer, and Rakesh Chaurasia (flute) on this winning track. This impressive feat marks three Grammys for Hussain in a single night, while Chaurasia received two awards.
 

India Brings Home THREE Awards
 

Besides Shakti, India’s Rakesh Chaurasia also won two awards — Global Music Performance and Contemporary Instrumental Album.
 
 
 
While Indian musicians scored big wins at the Grammys, Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift also won big. Miley Cyrus won her first-ever Grammy award for Flowers, and Taylor Swift lifted the trophy for Midnights.
