The bilateral trade between Qatar and the United States which has witnessed a sharp growth by 64 percent indicates that Doha has moved on from economic blockade put by Arab quartet including Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates accusing it of supporting terrorism and sowing discord in the region.
Amidst intensified Gulf crisis, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) on Friday reiterated that unless and until Qatar fulfills 13 demands announced by Arab quartet, there would be no starting point for any meaningful negotiations. Notably, Arab quartet including Bahrain, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates have cut off ties with Qatar and have put the stringent economic sanctions on Doha, accusing it of supporting terrorism and sowing discord in the region.
The United States of America on Tuesday approved the sale of 12 Bell AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters at the cost of $911.4 million. Notably, Bahrain will use the helicopters as a deterrent to regional threats and strengthen its homeland defence. The Defence Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) said that Bahrain has requested 12 Bell AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters via the U.S. Foreign Military Sale process which has been approved. The DSCA estimated that the cost of the purchase is $911.4 million.
Finally, Saudi Arabia has agreed to re-open Hodeidah port for a minimum of 30 days to provide food aid and commercial fuel to Yemen which is suffering from the disastrous outbreak of cholera. Notably, the death toll has surged to 2,225 while one million people are affected due to cholera in a war-torn Yemen.
After the United States and United Nation urged Saudi Arabia to ease the blockade in Yemen, the Kingdom has started supplying the foods, medicines and other necessary humanitarian aid to Sanaa which is affected by both civil war and outbreak of cholera.
The United Nations on Thursday urged Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen to fully lift its blockade of the country and also warned that untold thousands would die if it stayed in place. Notably, Yemen is suffering drastically from dual attack i.e from civil war and cholera that has killed thousands of innocent civilians.
Arab quartet of Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt said that the measures taken against Qatar will not be considered as "blockade" by any means. Notably, this was said by Permanent Representative of the United Arab Emirates to the United Nations Obeid Salem Al-Ziaabi, in Geneva on Thursday.
