Jamnagar, December 04: After knocking on the door of the southern state, a new case of variant of the concern has now entered the state of Gujarat. The Omicron variant was detected in Jamnagar. Notably, this is the third Omicron case in India.
According to the state health department, a man who returned from Zimbabwe has been found infected with the Omicron variant of coronavirus in Gujarat's Jamnagar. They informed us that a 72-year-old had initially tested positive for the disease on Thursday, following which his sample was sent for genome sequencing, in which he tested positive for COVID-19.
Gujarat's Commissioner of Health, Jai Prakash Shivhare, confirmed that the man was found infected with the Omicron strain. His sample has been sent to Pune.
Earlier, two people had tested positive for this variant in Karnataka. The Omicron strain has been marked as a "variant of concern" by the World Health Organization (WHO).
Amid fear of the third wave, the country has pressed pause on the scheduled resumption of commercial international passenger flights and also announced new guidelines for those entering the country from 'at risk' nations. Several states have also announced rules to curb the spread of the virus. Many, including Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai and former Puducherry Chief Minister, V Narayanasamy, have also called for booster shots to be administered.
Meanwhile, India reported 8,603 new cases of COVID-19 infections on Saturday. The tally of Coronavirus cases rose to 3,46,24,360, but active cases declined to 99,974, as per the data updated by the Union Health Ministry.
