Delhi court frames sedition, UAPA charges against Sharjeel Imam for ‘inflammatory speeches’

Imam is accused of an offence relating to sedition, promoting enmity between groups on the ground of religion, and indulging in unlawful activities to cause disaffection towards India.

New Delhi, Jan 24: Delhi Court has given a major setback to the JNU student, Sharjeel Imam, by slapping sedition and UAPA charges against him in connection with alleged inflammatory speeches delivered by him at Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar Pradesh, and the Jamia area in Delhi.

According to the private news agency, additional sessions judge Amitabh Rawat passed orders framing the charges against Sharjeel Imam under with charges under sections 124A (sedition), 153A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, etc), 153B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration), and 505 (statements conducing to public mischief) of the Indian Penal Code, along with section 13 (UAPA).
 
Imam is accused of an offence relating to sedition, promoting enmity between groups on the ground of religion, and indulging in unlawful activities to cause disaffection towards India. As per the prosecution, Imam had allegedly made speeches at Jamia Millia Islamia on December 13, 2019, and at Aligarh Muslim University on December 16, 2019, where he threatened to cut off Assam and the rest of the Northeast from India.
 
 
 
He is one of the key organisers of the Shaheen Bagh protest. He was booked for rioting and unlawful assembly on December 13 and 14, 2019 when violence broke between police and Jamia students as the force used tear gas, batons to disperse anti-CAA protestors.
 
The charge sheet against Imam mentioned: "He is accused of delivering seditious speeches and inciting a particular section of the community to indulge in unlawful activities, detrimental to sovereignty and integrity of the nation."
 
 
"In the garb of protesting against the Citizenship Amendment Act, he exhorted people of a particular community to block the highways leading to the major cities and resort to 'Chakka Jam', thereby disrupting normal life," it read.
 
A Delhi court had granted him bail in connection with the case of allegedly delivering an inflammatory speech at Jamia Milia Islamia which led to violence outside the university in December 2019. The Allahabad High Court had also granted bail to Imam in a case pertaining to alleged provocative speech against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act at Aligarh Muslim University in 2019. However, Imam still remains in jail as he has been charged with 'criminal conspiracy for allegedly planning the Delhi riots', under the UAPA act.
