Eternal Sentence?

There have been many patriotic leaders throughout our history, but none are currently the subject of national debate in India except for "Savarkar." Ironically, Savarkar was the only freedom fighter to be sentenced twice to a jail term in a dungeon that was no less than torture, but the real question is why, after so many years, he is still in that cell in Kalapaani.

Bharat has been blessed with a plethora of brave warriors in every period. But still, there are only three people who have the title "Veer" in their names. The first one is "Maha Veer," the second is the legendary king "Veer Vikram Aditya," and the third, which is also the most recent one, is "Veer Savarkar." There is a section in the ideological spectrum that is against Savarkar, as they try to delude the public about Savarkar. Their rigid ideological beliefs and viewpoints restrict them from knowing and understanding the great persona of Shri Vinayak Damodar Savarkar.

The Indian intelligentsia has repeatedly tried to portray Savarkar as an extremist who was apologetic to the British, without even reading his petitions to the then-British government. Those who accuse Savarkar of being apologetic should read his petitions, which were mainly legal in nature and were used by many freedom fighters at the time. The Britishers were frustrated with Savarkar when the bombings took place in Delhi, and they were forced to send an officer for interrogation named "Reginal Tradock" to Port Blair. His official jotting says that "I have spent 30 minutes with Savarkar, and the man shows no regret or apology for what he has done so far." These are the words of a British officer, not like Marxist historians who have nothing but concocted facts in their writings. In his petition from 1917, he stated in writing that if the authorities could release other prisoners by omitting his own name, then he would be as happy as a released prisoner.

There were other freedom fighters who adopted the path of mercy petitions as it was the only way to fight against the British. Shri Sripad Dange (Founder, CPI(M)) also circulated a petition similar to Savarkar's. Savarkar has himself written in his autobiography in Marathi about his petitions, and he has said that calling these petitions "mercy petitions" wouldn’t be right as these were legal petitions that were allowed by the British at different intervals. There is an argument that the difference between Savarkar and other freedom fighters is that the other freedom fighters resumed the fight after they were released. But, because he was in Port Blair, Savarkar did not have the luxury of a regular prison cell. The brothers were not released even after World War I, whereas other members of Congress were. Following the end of World War I, the royal proclamation was issued, and many prisoners were released, but the Savarkar brothers remained imprisoned. Looking at this, the younger brother of Savarkar, "Narayan Rao," met Gandhiji and asked him for help. It was the Mahatma who suggested that they both write mercy petitions. Even after getting out, he was not allowed to enter active politics or even practice journalism. He was under surveillance at all hours. Even Bhagat Singh regarded Savarkar’s writing as inclusive, and his article "Universal Love" mentions Savarkar as someone who believes in a "universal family." Dr. B.R. Ambedkar praised Savarkar on his package of "7 levels of removing untouchability" and said, "You’re the only one that understands that the evil of the caste system existed in the Varna system and its eradication is important."

The Congress party is the torchbearer of the slander campaign against Savarkar without even knowing or ignoring the views of the former PM, Mrs. Indra Gandhi who praised Savarkar as the epitome of patriotism, naming funds and stamps after him. You can have your own interpretations regarding Savarkar, but believe it or not, he is the man of the hour for our country right now, as only he has the fire that will guide Bharat to achieve the status of Vishwa-Guru.
