On Tuesday, June 9, former Trinamool Congress minister Ujjal Biswas
faced a violent mob at his Krishnagar residence in Nadia district, where residents stormed the premises, allegedly physically assaulted him, hurling eggs and vandalising parts of his home and office.
The trouble began when a crowd
gathered outside Biswas's house over allegations that tarpaulins, rags and sarees, supplied by the government for disaster relief and welfare distribution, had been stockpiled on his private premises for years without reaching the intended beneficiaries.
Protesters broke through security and forced their way inside, where a confrontation in his office chamber turned violent. Biswas was shoved, pelted with eggs and subjected to verbal abuse, while the premises sustained damage in the chaos.
BJP leaders alleged the materials had been sitting there since 2017, accusing the former minister of large-scale mismanagement and insisting that government relief stock belongs in official warehouses, not private residences. Biswas rejected the allegations, maintaining that the materials had only recently been received and that he had already notified the Block Development Officer of his intent to return them to official custody.
Tensions worsened when protesters found bundles of white sarees inside the premises, reigniting accusations of political misuse of welfare goods. A woman who attempted to shield Biswas was reportedly manhandled, and at least three others who tried to intervene were also attacked.
Police struggled to control the situation until senior officer Shilpi Paul arrived with central forces and escorted Biswas to safety at the local police station. The episode has set off a political storm across Nadia district, with both sides trading accusations over relief distribution, administrative accountability and the collapse of law and order.
