The recognition was given by the Arbor Day Foundation and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the UN. The city has given recognition for its commitment to growing and maintaining urban forests.

With that recognition, Hyderabad joined the list of like-minded cities that recognise the importance of trees in building healthy, resilient, and happy cities. It has earned recognition in the Foundation’s second year of the program with 51 other cities globally (120 cities from 63 countries assessed). Other cities that have earned this recognition are from the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand, with others being from South America, Europe, and Africa.

Congratulating Hyderabad on earning 2020 Tree Cities of the world recognition, Dan Lambe, President, Arbor Day Foundation, said “your city is part of an important global network leading the way in urban and community forestry. Now more than ever, trees and forests are a vital component of healthy livable, and sustainable cities and towns around the globe. Hyderabad’s commitment to effective urban forest management is helping to ensure a better future for its residents.”

While expressing the happiness the municipal administration and urban development minister K.T. Rama Rao, in a tweet, said this latest recognition to Hyderabad is an “acknowledgment of our efforts to improve green cover, as part of Haritha Haaram program.”
The state government's tree plantation initiative Haritha Haram has played a big role in this city's acknowledgment.
