MLA Jignesh Mevani sentenced to 3 months of jail imprisonment for 2017 Azadi march

Jignesh Mevani had recently come out of Assam jail after spending a few days under police custody.

A magisterial court in Gujarat sentenced Gujarat Independent MLA Jignesh Mevani and 9 others to 3 months of imprisonment. The court convicted him for a 5-year-old case for holding an ‘Azadi’ march without permission.

MLA Jignesh Mevani, Reshma Patel, Kaushik Parmar of National Dalit Adhikar Manch, Kaushik Parmar, Subodh Parmar including 10 others have been sentenced to three months imprisonment and a fine of Rs.1000. Out of the total 12 accused, 1 accused has died and the other accused is a fugitive.
 
 
Mevani and his associates led an 'Azadi Kooch' from Mehsana to Dhanera of the neighbouring Banaskantha district in 2017. In 2017, the Mehsana police registered a case of unlawful assembly against Mevani and others under Section 143 of the Indian Penal Code.

Notably, Mevani had recently come out of Assam jail after spending a few days under police custody. He was remanded for five days for allegedly assaulting Assam Police personnel. He was arrested first for a tweet against PM Modi, and when he got bail for that case, Assam Police arrested him again for assaulting Assam Police Personnel.
